At Tinwald, children are often involved in inquiry learning. This gives them the opportunity to ask open-ended questions, use their learning in new and creative ways and then "share it” at the end.

We have developed our own model of inquiry learning as shown opposite that takes children through three key stages of learning.  These three key stages can be undertaken in a hour long lesson, over a week or even over a term or more. This model allows children take control of their own learning.

Children go through three stages of inquiry learning 'Get It', 'Use It' and 'Share It". During the 'Get It' stage children make connections with the big idea/concept. From here they create wonderings about what they want to find out.
Children then move into the 'Use It' stage. Here they investigate their wonderings and reflect on their findings. Children often search for new understandings that will guide their next steps/inquiry during this stage. Finally children reach the 'Share It' stage. Here they pull together their learning and represent the understandings that they have gained from their investigations. They share or present their ideas to others by going 'public' with their learning. Once they have shared, children evaluate their learning and consider how this could affect their future learning. Children will also critically consider the action they will take in their lives and the world because of what they have come to understand.

Underpinning all of these stages are our key competencies that enable us to 'stay afloat' as we work on our findings. At each step and new stage children do their B.E.S.T (better every single time) our school motto, which is adapted into everything that we do.
